USM reveals new lab to boost cybersecurity field
The University of Southern Maine on Tuesday unveiled a new computer lab that seeks to boost training efforts for the cybersecurity industry and launch a wider, statewide hub.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the lab will serve as the center of the new Maine Cyber Security Cluster, which over time will stretch from the University of Maine at Presque Isle campus and down to York County Community College.
USM's cybersecurity program, which was made possible by about $1 million in federal and state funds, shows the direction sought by USM's new interim president, former Central Maine Power Co. CEO David Flanagan, who called the program “useful, practical, relevant [and] student-centric,” noting that it's supported by a public-private partnership.
Edward Sihler, the program's technical director, said the program seeks to train students for the growing cybersecurity field, facilitate a technology and software incubator and help connect students with businesses that can give them hands-on experience.
