Vatican OKs Mercy-EMHS merger

The Vatican has given its approval to a merger between Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems and the Mercy Health System, which operates a Portland hospital affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church.

The Forecaster reported the Vatican gave its approval last week to transfer Mercy’s assets to EMHS in a deal that state regulators are still reviewing.

The paper reported that the hospitals received anti-trust clearance from the Federal Trade Commission in March and a decision on the merger from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services is expected in September.

The merger plan has so far received little opposition, with only supporters of the merger speaking at a public hearing in early May.

Mercy announced its plan to merge with EMHS in December 2012 after a deal to merge with the Massachusetts-based Steward Health Care System fell through.
