The Portland-based smartphone app developer Chimani Inc. has partnered with Subaru of America to launch 59 specialized mobile app travel guides for each of the 59 national parks in the United States, just in time for the celebration of the National Park Service’s centennial.
“We began developing the national park apps in 2010 to address the need for better access to park information, while also understanding the cellular connectivity issue most parks face,” Kerry Gallivan, Chimani Inc. CEO and co-founder, said in a release. “Each of our national park apps includes curated, original content covering hiking trails and unique points of interest, park facilities and more; along with GPS-enabled maps that work without a cell or Wi-Fi connection.”
The launch of the national parks apps comes at a time of growth for Chimani, with Gallivan telling the Bangor Daily News that the user base for apps developed by the company is approximately 400% higher than the same time one year ago. Last month alone saw Chimani passing 1 million downloads for all of its apps.
Chimani was also featured in the first season of the Maine-centric pitch-off show “Greenlight Maine.” Gallivan was among the competitors squaring-off in pitch-offs for the competition’s $100,000 prize. The winner will be chosen June 24 at the end of Maine Startup and Create Week.
