EMMC unveils $305M Penobscot Pavilion expansion

Approximately 200 community leaders, donors, contractors and government officials, including Gov. Paul LePage, were on hand Tuesday morning for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of Eastern Maine Medical Center’s new $305 million expansion.

The Bangor Daily News reports that the eight-story structure, known as the Penobscot Pavilion, is home to the medical center’s main entrance, private rooms for cardiology patients and a 10-fold expansion to EMMC’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit from 3,000 square feet to approximately 30,000 square feet.

“Our patients and visitors will benefit from the most modern, patient-focused building we could create,” said Deborah Carey Johnson, the hospital’s president and CEO, according to the BDN.

Tuesday only marked the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the pavilion. New operating rooms, additional floors for cardiovascular services and space for women and families awaiting childbirth are slated to open in the summer of 2017.
