Voters nix racino, approve $134M in bonds

Maine voters yesterday denied the Passamaquoddy Tribe its wish to build a racino in Washington County, opposed extending legislators' term limits, but approved $134 million worth of bond proposals.

The three bonds that were approved will be used to spur economic development through research and development, help renovate the state's universities and colleges, and fund land conservation work. While voters narrowly approved the R&D and education bonds, the conservation bond won overwhelming support. Voters yesterday also rejected a proposal to extend term limits for legislators from four to six terms, or from eight to 12 years.

Washington County will have to find another way to promote economic development since, with 83% of precincts reporting, 52% of statewide voters rejected a bid by the Passamaquoddy Tribe to build a racino in Calais, according to the Bangor Daily News. However, more than 70% of Washington County voters backed the proposal.

Meanwhile, voters in Wiscasset voted 868 to 707 to reject Twin River Energy's plan to build a $1.5 billion coal gasification power plant in the town by not allowing the company a height variance it needed to continue, according to the Portland Press Herald. Scott Houldin, Twin River's project manager, said in a press release that the company would continue to pursue the project considering how close the vote was. He said that voters need more information "before giving the green light."
