Waldo County hospital looks for partner

After 106 years of independence, Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast wants to join a larger health care system.

Marc Biscone, executive director of the hospital, yesterday said the hospital is entertaining options to either join Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems in Brewer or MaineHealth, the corporate parent of Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to the Bangor Daily News. Joining a larger system would allow the hospital, which had net operating revenue of $50 million and profit of $1 million last year, to save money when purchasing equipment and medical supplies. The hospital employs 600.

Biscone said Waldo County General is leaning towards MaineHealth right now, but that the final decision could take up to a year, the paper said.
