Waterville-area nonprofits merge

Two Waterville-area nonprofits will merge as a way to save money and expand services. Kennebec Behavioral Health of Waterville today will buy Youth & Family Services Inc., which has offices in Augusta and Skowhegan, for an undisclosed price, according to the Kennebec Journal.

As of Wednesday, they will operate as Kennebec Behavioral Health. Youth & Family Service’s 36 employees have been offered positions in the merged organization, said Thomas McAdam, CEO of Kennebec Behavioral Health. The nonprofit treats adult and families with mental illness, trauma and emotional or behavioral problems, while Youth & Family Services specializes in mental health, substance abuse and youth shelter services. The nonprofits will eliminate duplicative services and combine agency offices in Skowhegan and Augusta.

McAdam said the nonprofits have collaborated frequently, and that budget cuts made it necessary to merge.
