Waterville Planning Board removes longtime chairman

The Waterville Planning Board voted to remove Chairman David Geller on Monday night with a 5-2 vote, leading to the election of Nick Champagne, a civil engineer who was attending the meeting for the first time as a board member.

Among those who voted in favor to elect the new chairman was Champagne’s father, Mark Champagne, who was also attending his first board meeting in addition to board members Bruce White, Paul Lussier and Jessica Laliberte.

According to a report by The Kennebec Journal, Geller had been a member of the board for 11 years and served as its chairman for eight. Before Monday’s meeting Geller informed those in attendance that the city’s charter required the election of a chairman.

“I had thought that I was running organized meetings, and apparently the people on the board wanted to have somebody else run the show, which is fine. I was surprised, but I’m not upset,” said Geller.
