Portland-based Waypoint Brokers Collective joined 1% for the Planet and said it will donate 1% of annual gross sales to Maine nonprofits focused on the local environment.
“At Waypoint Brokers Collective, whether you're a lifelong Mainer or a recent transplant, we’ve all chosen Southern Maine as home,” said Monica Dambach, a Waypoint partner and Realtor. “We believe in not just finding homes, but in preserving the beauty of our state for future generations.”
Waypoint is a collaborative full-service real estate brokerage providing services for buyers, sellers, investors and developers.
The nonprofit 1% for the Planet aims to make environmental giving easy and effective through partnership advising, impact storytelling and third-party certification. Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, its network consists of thousands of businesses and environmental partners.
“Real estate infrastructure contributes 39% of global carbon emissions annually,” Waypoint said in a news release. “Retrofitting older construction to improve energy efficiency can be challenging. Maine has some of the country's oldest housing stock, and we are underproducing new efficient construction to meet demand. Many homeowners find the process confusing and expensive or simply don’t know where or why to start.”
Maine faces unique challenges, the firm continued.
“Our economy is largely fueled by tourism seeking our natural landscapes,” the firm said. “Maine is also one of the most moved-to American states in recent years and is predicted to be a future haven for climate refugees looking to escape the effects of climate change.”
Waypoint said it is committed to advancing sustainability in the real estate industry.
“We are improving business operations to be more sustainable, enhancing our client services with education and resources, and centering sustainability in our community advocacy and outreach work,” the firm said. “Additionally, all Waypoint agents are required to achieve their Green Designation, ensuring they have specialized knowledge on the intersection of sustainability and real estate.”
“Currently, only 3% of total philanthropy goes to the environment and only 5% of that comes from businesses,” said Kate Williams, CEO of 1% for the Planet. “The planet needs bigger support than this, and our growing network of business members are doing vital work to increase giving and support on-the-ground action.”
