Old Town city officials expected to see a lot of business after they announced some "Stay and Play Paddle Adventures" offered by Old Town Canoe, but there was one problem -- no one could register online.
Dan Cashman, a city spokesman, says an online glitch prevented people from signing up for the canoe and kayaking adventures after the program was announced this spring. The problem has since been resolved, but Cashman says they have not seen many people register yet.
"I know it's been very, very few," he says.
Cashman was hopeful more people would register for the half- and full-day trips scheduled on July 10 and 11, July 30 to Aug. 1, and Aug. 20 as the city gets the word out that it can accept online registrations. Online registrations can now be made at www.stayandplay.org.
The city and Old Town Canoe, along with other area organizations and businesses, formed a partnership to offer the packages that include seven guided tours along with lodging, equipment and ground transportation. The other partners are the Black Bear Inn, the University of Maine, Penobscot Nation, Cyr Bus Line, Greater Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau, Old Town Trading Post and Johnson Outdoors, owner of Old Town Canoe.
Kerrie Tripp, executive director of the convention and visitors bureau, says despite the glitch, if her office, the chamber of commerce or Old Town Canoe received inquiries from visitors about canoeing or kayaking in the region, they would have told them about the stay-and-play paddle program.
Tripp also says the CVB and St. John, N.B., tourism officials have not launched the two nation vacation website they announced in May to offer different itineraries for visitors in both regions. A kayaking tour was one of the options discussed, but she could not say if that would still be offered. "It will continue to change and grow as we find different pockets of tourism that people are interested in."
