Wind power moratorium for Fort Kent?

Fort Kent residents are hoping to impose a 180-day moratorium on wind power development until the town can craft stricter land-use ordinances.

The group Citizens for Responsible Wind Development, organized by Fort Kent attorney Dave Soucy, planned to submit its moratorium petition to the Fort Kent town council today, according to the Bangor Daily News. The group circulated the petition after Texas-based Horizon Wind began negotiating lease agreements with landowners in Fort Kent and elsewhere in Aroostook County for a project that would include as many as 400, 400-foot-tall wind turbines.

The petition alleges that Fort Kent's current land-use laws do not adequately address wind power development and must be changed to protect the health, welfare and safety of town residents, the paper reported. Horizon has not yet filed an application with local or state authorities for the project.
