JAX at odds with EPA

Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor could be fined over $200,000 for violating state and federal hazardous waste regulations.

The $213,670 fine was proposed in a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency administrative order for improperly storing potentially explosive chemicals and wastes in three of JAX's labs, and for not properly training staff on how to handle hazardous waste materials, according to a press release from the EPA. The violations came from an inspection conducted by the EPA in November 2006.

In a statement, The Jackson Lab called the violations "minor paperwork lapses" and says they did not pose "any threat to the environment or safety of our campus or town." Jackson Lab officials plan to meet with EPA representatives in response to the violations, according to the release.
