Some major projects came to their completion at the end of the year. In Waterville, Landry-French Construction, of Scarborough, completed the Paul J. Schupf Art Center, an $18 million art center commissioned by Colby College and Waterville Creates. The 32,000-square-foot center had its official opening Dec. 17. It serves as a home for visual and performing arts, arts education and film, and houses offices for Waterville Creates. It will also include the Colby College Museum of Art’s Joan Dignam Schmaltz Gallery of Art. The project was designed by Susan T Rodriguez | Architecture Design of New York City in collaboration with OPAL / Architecture Research Design of Belfast.
In Portland, Consigli Construction, with its Maine headquarters in Portland, completed the new site for the University of Maine School of Law, at 300 Fore St., the former home of the Council on International Educational Exchange. MaineLaw moves from a 1960s-era building at 246 Deering Ave. in Portland. The building will also house the UMaine Graduate and Professional Center, the UMaine Graduate School of Business and Portland Gateway. The building will include nine “innovative learning spaces with premier technology and customizable furnishings,” three large study spaces, two 100-person classrooms, 10 semi-private group study spaces, dedicated space for the Maine Law Review and a fully staffed law library.
PM Construction, of Saco, has three Portland housing projects underway or near completion.
Consigli Construction hosted a “Day with the trades” event for high school students on Dec. 20, at the Maine Judicial Branch’s York Judicial Center, a 120,000-square-foot construction site managed by Consigli. The three-story building, which will house 10 courtrooms and related spaces, will be powered by electricity. It will have geothermal heating and cooling and a photo-voltaic rooftop array.
Students were introduced to the teams and projects and got an overview of materials from Consigli and Riggs (concrete); Landry & Sons Acoustics (drop ceilings); Wagner Drywall Inc. (drywall and framing); Interstate Electric Services; St. Albans Glass Co. (glass systems); CP Blouin (HVAC); ProCraft, Consigli, Riggs (finish carpentry and millwork); Royal Flooring; Atlantic Landscaping; Lighthouse Masonry Inc.; Maine Steel; Johnson & Jordan (plumbing and mechanical); Tecta America (roofing); RJ Grondin (site work); and American Steel and Precast (structural steel).
