Much-needed workforce housing is in the offing for Bar Harbor, a popular vacation and summer-home destination where the affordable-home market of yesteryear has been overwhelmed by online rental markets like Airbnb.
The Mount Desert Islander reported that the Island Housing Trust, a nonprofit that promotes workforce housing on Mount Desert Island, has obtained an option to purchase 30 acres of land to build as many as 12 affordable homes. It would be the largest IHT development since the organization was founded in 1989. Residents would have to be employed on MDI and have a household income below a certain threshold. An additional 30 acres of the 60-acre parcel would be sold to Maine Coast Heritage Trust for conservation.
“We try very hard to find the right balance between conservation and development, specifically workforce housing, because that is such an acute community issue here,” Misha Mytar, MCHT’s land project manager for MDI, told the paper.
