World-class ski race center proposed for Augusta

An official with the International Skiing Federation is proposing Augusta build a world-class, cross-country ski center on city-owned land that could attract international ski races and pump money into the city's winter economy.

Bill Rogers, a local orthopedic surgeon and official with the ISF, shared his vision for the cross-country ski race center in Augusta at a recent Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce breakfast, according to the Kennebec Journal. A city-owned, 260-acre lot between Bond Brook and the Augusta State Airport would be the perfect place for a ski race center, Rogers said. He said the center would be modeled after ones in Presque Isle and Fort Kent where the Maine Winter Sports Center has held internationally-sanctioned races.

To build the center would cost just under $1 million, plus about $100,000 a year to run it, Rogers told the crowd. A local attorney, Mike Seitzinger, is setting up a nonprofit corporation to raise funds for the recreational development of the city-owned lot, the paper reported.
