A Florida-based, high-end yacht manufacturer is considering buying The Boat School from the city of Eastport, expanding it and creating 100 jobs.
David Marlow of Marlow Yachts told city councilors during a workshop this week he wants to expand the school from a two- to a four-year marines trades program and build a yacht manufacturing facility to build the company's vessels, which cost $1.5 million to $3.6 million, according to the Bangor Daily News. The city took ownership of the school from the state in 2007 and began leasing it to Husson University in 2007, but the city still loses $150,000 annually, prompting officials to consider closing it. City officials support Marlow's project, which could also boost the port of Eastport by shipping the yachts to customers around the world.
Marlow is a seasonal resident of Brooksville, and his company employs 750 people at its marine service facility in Tampa Bay, Fla., as well as 1,000 employees at a Taiwan shipyard. Marlow is preparing to submit a written proposal to the city, while Eastport officials determine if legislative action is needed in order for it to sell The Boat School, according to the paper.
