More than 857,000 Maine households are in line to receive $850 relief checks under the state's new supplemental budget, signed into law by Gov. Janet Mills last week.
The state says its coffers are full, and is now returning some of the surplus to select taxpayers.
There's even an online tool to help Mainers determine if they'll be receiving a check.

It would be better for all of us if the governement cut spending. Also, if both state and federal governments would stop causing inflation by making it harder and more expensive to create our own energy, people would not need as many handouts. Also, it would be more fair to cut taxes for everyone since this handout only goes to those in lower income brackets (myself included), but not to everyone who paid taxes. This is another example of redistributing our nation's wealth.
A rebate is the repayment of an overpayment. If the Governor were sincere with this offer, she would have given the money back to the taxpayers in the proportion they paid.
SURPLUS? Do you mean that the government overtaxed us? Could this extra money be a special gift from our Governor that we will receive right before the election? The rebate does not even make sense. If you paid a few hundred in taxes, you get a rebate, but you do not qualify for the rebate if you paid tens of thousands in taxes. Every S-Corp owner in Maine does not qualify. We are not talking about WEX or Anthem; we are talking about landscapers, carpenters, convenience store owners, etc.
Reduce both federal and state tax burdens, these politicians just spend our hard earned money as though it is water. Mills is buying votes.

I am happy we will get something back from the state, but it doesn't make up for their wasteful spending and poor management. If we calculated inflation today, the same way they used to, we would be looking at an inflation rate of well over 15% to compare to the 1970's when it was between 6-12%. Today's calculation leaves out housing, fuel and food. Our largest and most necessary items. So don't listen to people or the media when they tell you it isn't so bad. It is horrible and politicians better wake up. We should never be able to call someone a career politician. That is not what the founders envisioned. They have forgotten they are supposed to be public servants, not an elite bunch of rich, power hungry politicians!
