Maine's most valuable fishery became even more valuable in 2021, with an annual lobster catch worth $725 million, the Department of Marine Resources announced last week.

Lobster landings increased 10%, and higher prices-per-pound drove the value of the year's catch up 76% over the 2020 level. Previously, the 2016 harvest was the most valuable on record, at $541 million.

Lobster is a traditional favorite at Maine seafood restaurants, but the pandemic has also spurred the industry to market the crustacean as a home-cooked dish.

Supporting our lobster industry is incredibly important to many industries, not just the lobster industry. From boatyards, to gear suppliers, and more rely on the income. What better way to support our economy than eat some delicious lobster!

We usually eat lobster a few times a month in the summer. This past summer we only had it once the whole summer because of the price. This winter we haven't had it at all... also unusual for us.

I would have eaten a lot more but at $15.00 - $20.00 a pound I got priced out of my dinner.

As locals, we eat lobster when we have visitors from away!
