In recent weeks, several Maine cities and towns have passed ordinances requiring the public to use face coverings when inside businesses and other places.
Since Portland's requirement went into effect Jan. 5, similar mandates have begun in Bath, Brunswick, Freeport and South Portland. Other communities, including Falmouth, have rejected such proposals. (And an update: On Monday, the city of Portland rescinded its mandate.)
Cases of COVID-19 in Maine surged in January, mostly due to the omicron variant's toll among unvaccinated people. However, the number of hospitalizations now appears to be waning.
As of Friday, 1,804 Mainers had died of COVID-associated causes.

Major cities across the U.S. and the world are stopping the mask mandates. If you want to wear a mask, please do! None of us will judge you. The thought that we have to wear a mask to walk in a restaurant, but it is okay to be maskless when we sit is something future generations will laugh at our faulty thinking. Be safe, be smart, but most of all, be kind!
It is time to stop acting like COVID-19 is as deadly as the black plague. I am not saying that COVID is not serious, but it is time to stop letting it totally disrupt our lives. At this point, so many people have had the disease, that we must be close to herd immunity anyway. Let people do what they feel is necessary to protect their own health, and stop with the mandates.
It is way too late to think about mask mandates. If we wanted to trim the omicron surge I would have supported mandates 6 weeks ago. But now?
If we masked for just another month or two it would go a long way in getting over this winter spike. The mask resistance is ridiculous.

If someone has concerns and likes wearing a mask, they should wear one. Wearing masks should not be mandated. It's time to get back to normal. The weather is improving, people will be outside more. I feel bad for the businesspeople that have to wear one all day long. It is also very common to see people wearing masks improperly below their nose. Enough already!
