$1.4M to fund Down East broadband co.

A Machias-based telecommunications company received a $1.4 million federal grant to expand broadband access in Washington County.

Axiom Technologies will use the $1.43 million in stimulus funds to increase broadband adoption, as well as to fund education and career training in technology, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud. Through the grant, Axiom will launch a pilot project to help local industries use broadband technology for economic development by giving 10 local farming operations and 10 fishing businesses wireless equipment and laptops. The project also includes expanding distance learning for health care professionals in partnership with the Central Maine Medical Center College of Nursing and Health Professions, according to the release.

Partners in the plan, called the "Washington County Education and Employment through Sustainable Broadband Adoption Project," are the University of Maine at Machias, the Downeast Institute of Applied Marine Research and Education, the Sunrise County Blueberry Cooperative and Down East Community Hospital, according to a release from Axiom.
