The Oxford County town of Fryeburg will soon get an infusion of 28 apartments for seniors.

Avesta Housing said it will cut the ribbon Oct. 23 on Snow School Apartments, which are affordable units designated for residents age 55-plus.

Located at 11 Pine St., Snow School Apartments demonstrates that unused public property can be repurposed to create a resource for the community, according to a news release.

The development was built on the site of the former Charles A. Snow School, a circa 1923 elementary school that was shuttered in 2017.

Avesta purchased the property from the town of Fryeburg, demolished the building and developed the units.

Some 23% of Maine's population is made up of older adults, more than any state, said Rebecca Hatfield, Avesta's president and CEO, "and many of them are struggling to afford a safe, quality, affordable home. Snow School Apartments provides that housing stability and provides its residents with a place to age in place with dignity and in comfort.”

About the development

Construction of the Snow School Apartments totaled $9.7 million. The building was designed by CWS Architecture + Interior Design of Scarborough and built by Optimum Construction Co. of South Portland. More than two dozen local subcontractors and suppliers were involved in the development.

The apartments have a range of income qualifications to meet the needs of older adults in the community. The property includes a shared laundry room and community room.

Avesta Housing is a nonprofit affordable housing provider with more than 50 years of experience in affordable housing development and property management in Maine and New Hampshire. The organization is headquartered in Portland and operates 100 affordable properties, more than 3,100 apartments and two assisted living facilities, providing homes for more than 4,700 people.

The developer said an additional 800 new homes are in the pipeline.
