National insurer Anthem Inc. said it has discovered that recently exposed customer data goes all the way back to 2004, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The company’s announcement came a day before Anthem was expected to provide information Friday afternoon on how impacted customers can sign up for free credit monitoring and identity services for two years at www.anthemfacts.com.
The data breach, announced last week, impacted a database with as many as 80 million people across all 50 states. The exposed information includes names, birthdays, Social Security numbers, street addresses, email addresses and employment information.
Anthem was criticized in a Tuesday letter from 10 states, including Maine, for not notifying customers fast enough about the data breach. But after it said it would deploy monitoring tools by Friday, Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen, the one who penned the original letter, said he is “pleased that Anthem has responded quickly and positively.”
