Bangor airport renovation project advances
Bangor International Airport's proposal to undertake a $5 million renovation to expand capacity received approval from the city's finance committee. The airport wants to upgrade its general aviation apron, the paved area used for parking airplanes.
The improvements would allow BIA to handle aircraft weighing up to 150,000 pounds, according to the Bangor Daily News. Currently, its limit is less than 100,000 pounds. BIA typically has 40 to 50 planes parked on the apron. The federal Airport Improvement Program will fund 90% of the project, while the city will contribute 7.5% and the Maine Department of Transportation 2.5%. If given final approval, the work will be done by Old Town-based Sargent Corp., and last from April to September. The work will have little impact on passengers, BIA's Interim Director Tony Caruso told the paper.
The airport is also considering expanding its parking lots to accommodate more passengers. Both the number of passengers and flights have increased over the last 13 months, and the airport has seen a 30% increase in the number of cars parked in its lots.
