Bangor to receive nearly $2M to upgrade aging bus fleet
The Bangor Community Connector Public Transit System will receive $1.94 million in grant funding through the Federal Transit Administration’s Buses and Bus Facilities Grants Program to replace buses in its Community Connector fleet.
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, chairman of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, announced the grant award this week.
“For more than 40 years, public transportation has played a key role in the economic growth of the greater Bangor area,” Collins said in a news release. “The Bangor Community Connector Public Transit System provides effective, safe and reliable transportation for Bangor area residents, many of whom rely on bus services as their primary means of transportation. This investment will allow the City of Bangor to upgrade their aging bus fleet, increasing access to employment, education and health care in both our rural and urban areas.”
The Bangor Community Connector Public Transit System serves the greater Bangor area, including the towns of Brewer, Hampden, Orono, Veazie and Old Town, as well as the University of Maine.
The number of riders has doubled in the last decade.
