Bath Iron Works employees file human rights complaints

A Maine Human Rights Commission investigator found reasonable grounds to support age-discrimination complaints filed by three Bath Iron Works employees.

The Bangor Daily News reported that 18 BIW workers formally complained to the Maine Human Rights Commission that the shipyard violated their rights due to a company-wide pattern of discrimination against older employees, but the investigator recommended dismissing all but three of the complaints because of a lack of reasonable grounds.

Some of the complaints also allege BIW discriminated against employees based on their disabilities and denied reasonable accommodation for those workers, the BDN reported.

The parties in one of the three complaints found to have reasonable grounds, a complaint from preservation technician Joseph Page of South China, reported to the commission that they had settled and asked that it be withdrawn from the consent agenda. The commission is scheduled to vote Monday on the investigator’s reports.
