U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the Navy’s first Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyer (DDG-51) will be built at Bath Iron Works.
The guided-missile destroyer will feature an array of new technology including the SPY-6 radar — also known as the Air and Missile Defense Radar — which significantly enhances a ship’s ability to detect air and surface targets as well as increasing ballistic missile threats.
“There is no workforce in the world better positioned to build the first of the Navy’s upgraded destroyers, which will help ensure that the strength of our Navy’s capabilities remain unrivaled," Collins and King said in a joint statement released April 30. “Destroyers are the workhorses of the Navy, delivering capability and presence that have been demonstrated many times during the past year alone. With countless threats across the globe, the value and importance of our naval assets to our security and stability have never been greater.”
In a February letter to Adm. John Richardson, chief of naval operations, Collins and King pushed for the Navy to include the funding needed to complete construction of the destroyer. Following the senators’ urging, the $433 million needed to build the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer became the No. 2 priority on the Navy’s fiscal year 2017 unfunded priorities list.
