Adding to Maine's craft-brewing cachet on the global stage, Biddeford-based Banded Brewing Co. has scooped up two awards in the 2020 New York International Beer Competition, the ninth installment of the annual awards.
The competition, which claims to be the only one in the world judged by trade buyers, is part of the the International Beverage Competition series of wine, beer, cider and spirits competitions taking place in New York City, Berlin, Melbourne and Hong Kong annually.
This year's contest attracted more than 600 submissions in over 30 categories from more than 14 countries, Judges assess beers both by category and actual price.
This year from Maine, Banded Brewing was recognized as Best Maine Coffee Beer Brewery of the Year in the individual category, while its Jolly Woodsman coffee stout brand — which is brewed with Speckled Ax Kenyan espresso — was honored with a silver medal.
'What we like about Maine Breweries is that their beers reflects their local community," Adam Levy, founder of the International Beverage Competition Series, told Mainebiz.
"The beers may be individualistic," he added, "but their primary beer styles are mainstream and solid — few surprises and mostly good value beer with little disappointment with what we have tasted."
Levy added that Banded Brewery also won in 2019, when it was recognized as Maine Brewery of the Year, while Funky Bow Brewery of Lyman was the 2018 Maine Brewery of the Year. There was no such award this year, only the two awards for Banded Brewery.
Sean Sullivan, executive director of the Maine Brewers' Guild and a 2016 Mainebiz Next list honoree, welcomed the news about this year's competition.
"It's great to see Banded Brewing winning an award out of state," he told Mainebiz. "Maine brewers are working hard to produce world class beers and it's great to see their efforts recognized."
