Citing production delays due to equipment failures at a 45-year-old “blast and paint building,” Bath Iron Works submitted plans to build a 20,000-square-foot steel preservation facility at its Hardings manufacturing plant in East Brunswick.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Brunswick’s planning staff has reviewed the shipyard’s sketch plans earlier this month for a new building on the 28-acre Bath Road site to replace the existing blast-and-paint building that blasts and primes virtually every piece of steel that goes into the Navy ships being built at BIW’s Bath shipyard.
“Over the last several years, the equipment has had mechanical and technical problems, which have cause disruption to the manufacturing process and remains one of the least reliable processes for Bath Iron Works,” BDN reported, quoting from the shipyard’s application.
Brunswick Town Planner Jared Woolston told the newspaper that BIW has expressed hope that the town’s approval process will move quickly.
