BIW to lay off another 118 before year's end

Bath Iron Works plans to lay off 118 workers Dec. 20, putting the shipyard’s total job cuts at more than 200 for the year.

The Portland Press Herald reported BIW spokesman Jim DeMartini said the cuts come in response to a changing workload at the shipyard. The layoffs may be reduced if the shipyard, which employs more than 5,000 people, decides to open other positions before Dec. 20.

The defense contractor eliminated 121 positions in September and November, a figure that includes 41 shipfitters that were spared temporarily by being moved to another project. Those workers are included in this latest round of layoffs, the paper reported, bringing the total layoffs for the year to 239.

Earlier this week, the shipyard received a $74 million contract modification for design and planning work on the Navy’s DDG-51 class destroyers and FFG-7 class frigates.
