Black Nubble foes file complaint, ask for recusal

Opponents of a wind farm planned in western Maine want a member of the Land Use Regulation Commission to recuse himself from discussions that begin today on the project.

The complaint ˆ– filed on behalf of groups including Maine Audubon and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy ˆ– claims Commissioner Stephen Wight acted inappropriately after LURC in January rejected the initial wind farm project proposed by Maine Mountain Power. The complaint says Wight called other commissioners to discuss the project and the vote after being contacted by a supporter of the project, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The complaint also asks a second LURC member, Steve Schaeffer, to pledge that he will be impartial or to recuse himself from the discussions because he told Wight he wished there was a way he could help Maine Mountain Power, the paper said. The Press Herald was unable to contact either Wight or Schaeffer.

The three-day hearing on the scaled-down, 18-turbine Black Nubble wind farm project begins today at Sugarloaf/USA in Carrabassett Valley.
