Terra Speakers, a Brunswick-based manufacturer, has expanded its facility and workforce to meet growing demand of its specialty commercial speakers.
James Banfield, Terra’s president, told Mainebiz the company has added two-and-a-half workers to its existing two-person workforce in the last five months. It has also doubled its Route 1 production and storage space to about 6,000 square feet.
“We have been ... a small but strong manufacturing operation for 15 years, so it feels great to expand our facilities to accommodate increasing demand,” Banfield said. “We ship our speakers to Maine, the Caribbean, to Israel — everywhere. That global demand is helping us grow our teams and facilities.”
Banfield said the increasing demand is primarily coming from houses of worship that are seeking to use the company's CAMM line of speakers. The speaker system is installed in more than 2,500 locations, primarily in the New York metropolitan area, he said, but the market for the speakers is now expanding nationwide.
The CAMM line was originally designed for house-of-worship applications, producing a clean and clear performance for larger environments, but Terra has since expanded its focus to new markets, like restaurants and corporate spaces.
Terra, which was founded in 1999, sells its products, which also include all-climate outdoor speakers, through residential and commercial installation professionals.
“The expansion of the CAMM series is especially exciting,” Banfield said. “We are starting to see them installed in more restaurants and corporate spaces, and they have been installed at St. Peter the Apostle [in Philadelphia], so the voice of Pope Francis will be projected from them. Not bad for a company based in Maine.”
Banfield said he projects Terra’s sales to grow up to 40% in the next two years.
"We are expecting a fairly busy year right now," he said.
