Brookdale, the nation's largest senior-living provider, is planning to open its first location in Maine, where it's expected to create over 50 full- and part-time jobs.
Brookdale recently announced that its Bellavita assisted-living and dementia care community will open in Scarborough sometime early this year. The location will include 61 assisted-living and 20 Alzheimer's care rental apartments.
The announcement comes as the state's aging population and number of Mainers diagnosed with dementia continue to increase, creating a growing demand for services from health care and senior-living providers. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, people 60 years or older will represent nearly one third of Maine's population by 2030, a 40% increase from 2012. At the same time, the Alzheimer's Association projects that dementia diagnoses in Maine will increase 40% in the next 10 years.
“We know that more seniors and their families are looking for services, and we are excited about providing these wonderful new options with the upcoming opening of Bellavita at Scarborough,” said Melissa Craig, the Scarborough location's executive director, in a prepared statement.
Brookdale operates more than 1,150 communities in 47 states, Maine included.
