Casella eyes Westbrook for trash processing

The city of Westbrook may become the new home of Biddeford's controversial trash processing facility.

Casella Waste Systems is proposing to move its Maine Energy Recovery Co. processing operation from Biddeford to a site next to its construction and demolition facility already in the works in Westbrook, according to Current Publishing. The move is part of a plan developed in October to mitigate MERC's effects on downtown Biddeford. Casella has already won approval from the Westbrook planning board for a $9 million, 48,000-square-foot demolition facility and recycling center, but would likely return to the planning board to discuss the addition of a trash facility.

Some Westbrook officials, including Mayor-elect Colleen Hilton, are concerned that trash processing would create an unpleasant smell. But Casella officials said neither the facility nor the trucks traveling to it would emit an odor, according to the paper. The company has proposed sorting and compressing trash into pellets in Westbrook, then trucking the pellets to Biddeford for incineration.
