New population statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau show Maine's population is relatively stagnant. Maine was one of only three states to see its population fall from April 2010 to July 2011, but from July 2010 to July 2011, Maine gained people.
In the 15-month period from April 1, 2010, to July 1, 2011, Maine lost 173 people, according to the Bangor Daily News. Rhode Island and Michigan were the only other states to record a population loss during that time frame. However, other Census data show Maine gained 809 people in the 12-month period from July 1, 2010, to July 1, 2011, marking the first 12-month population increase in Maine in three years, Joel Johnson, an economist with the State Planning Office, told the paper. Maine lost 919 people from July 2008 to July 2009, and an additional 2,023 people the next year.
Maine's birth and death rates were flat over the past year, indicating the population loss from April 2010 to July 2011 was from people leaving the state.
