Cianbro nets new Brewer contract

A new contract is expected to bring at least 100 jobs to Cianbro Corp.'s Eastern Manufacturing Facility in Brewer.

The Pittsfield-based construction company won a contract to manufacture 22 building modules at its Eastern Manufacturing Facility for a nickel processing operation in Newfoundland, according to the Bangor Daily News. Cianbro will build electrical rooms that will later be installed at the processing plant operated by Brazilian-based mining company Vale. The project is expected to get under way in November and create a minimum of 100 jobs, Cianbro CEO Peter Vigue told the paper.

The company had been searching for a new project for its Eastern Manufacturing Facility as work ended this summer on its module construction for an oil refinery. The company gradually downsized its 500-person work force in Brewer to 100 people through temporary layoffs and transferring employees to other positions within the corporation.
