Collins secures wood pellet approval for FHA homes
The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development has changed guidelines to allow FHA-insured homes to use wood pellet heating systems as a conventional heating source, based on an initiative from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins.
Federal Housing Administration appraiser guidelines now allow wood pellet systems as an acceptable heating source for FHA-insured single-family properties, according to a press release from HUD. The announcement was made during HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan’s testimony on HUD’s fiscal year 2013 budget before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development. “With more than 70% of Maine families dependent on fossil fuels to heat their homes, this is one way we at HUD can relieve financial pressure on families while supporting a growing source of alternative energy and local jobs,” he said in the release.
To qualify for FHA guidelines, wood pellet boilers must meet several criteria, including heating living areas to a minimum of 50 degrees and being permanently installed.
