Delay in asbestos removal draws DEP ire
The state is preparing to levy fines on two private companies after they failed to complete asbestos removal work on the Forster Manufacturing mill.
Adam Mack, the building's owner, and Ryan Byther of Down East Construction are facing fines and additional legal action from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, over "one of the worst asbestos sites our staff has ever seen," according to Maine DEP spokesperson Samantha Depoy-Warren.
Demolition work on the mill building in Wilton was halted in July of last year after high asbestos levels were detected, according to the Morning Sentinel. Abatement Professionals Corp. of Westbrook was hired to complete the abatement process, but nearly a year later the work has yet to be completed. "We think Mack hired Abatement Professionals but never paid them," said Depoy-Warren.
She said the DEP is working with the Maine Attorney General's Office to draft consent agreements for both Mack and Byther that would outline the cleanup process and enforcement penalties.
