Domtar mill adds nine workers

A Down East pulp mill that struggled in a weak market last year has grown slightly in 2010.

Montreal-based Domtar Corp. recently added nine people to its staff of 300 at its mill in Baileyville, according to the Bangor Daily News. Citing slowing pulp demand and lagging prices, the company idled the mill last spring and temporarily laid off its 300 workers, but reopened in June.

The new hires come as a federal tax credit that benefitted the mill and others in Maine ends. The 50-cent per gallon tax credit for burning an alternative fuel known as black liquor, a byproduct of pulp making, expired Friday. Domtar spokesman Scott Beal said, despite the loss of the credit, the company is anticipating a "productive" 2010. "The market conditions are on an upswing. If these market conditions continue, I'm very optimistic for 2010," he told the paper.
