A Missouri company looking to redevelop the former Moosehead Manufacturing plant in Dover-Foxcroft Monday won initial support from the town's selectmen.
Selectmen have approved a one-year option on the town-owned property for Kansas City-based Arnold Development Group, which wants to turn the former furniture manufacturing facility into retail, office and light manufacturing space and housing, according to the Bangor Daily News. The agreement allows the company to purchase the property for $1, with the stipulation that at least $4.8 million be spent at the site over a four-year construction period. Jonathan Arnold, president of the development company, said his immediate plans are to draft architectural plans for the building, secure more marketing collateral and apply for state and federal grants to help pay for the redevelopment, according to the paper.
Dover-Foxcroft took over the 85,000-square-foot plant in March 2009 after the owners stopped paying taxes on the property. Moosehead Manufacturing, which operated in Dover-Foxcroft and Monson, shut down in 2007 due to challenges related to foreign competition. That same year, Republican leader in the Maine House of Representatives Joshua Tardy and Maine State Chamber of Commerce President Dana Connors, along with another investor, bought the company and restarted its Monson operations as Moosehead Furniture. Tardy-Connors LLC shut down operations earlier this year and declared bankruptcy, and the Passamaquoddy Tribe is exploring buying the company and making furniture.
