Study moves BNAS reuse forward

Efforts to take over operations of the Brunswick Naval Air Station properties advanced yesterday with the release of a vital review of the reuse plan.

The Navy yesterday issued the draft of its environmental impact statement more than two years after the process began, according to The Times Record. The study examines how proposed reuses of the 3,200-acre property would affect the area communities, local transportation, housing availability and wildlife, and found no major problems that would have forced reuse officials to rework their redevelopment plans. The impact statement must be finalized before the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority can take control of the property and transfer it or lease it to tenants, and MRRA had previously revised its timeline for beginning redevelopment after it became clear the impact statement would not be finalized until late summer at the earliest, according to the paper.

The public has until June 28 to comment on the draft statement before a final version is released.
