Down East co. fined for clearcutting

A Deblois wreath and peat company recently was fined $95,000 for clear cutting several sites in Washington County.

Worcester Holdings LLC and Worcester Peat Co. agreed to pay the civil penalty, which is intended to remove any profit it generated from illegal harvesting operations on multiple sites totaling 350 acres in Washington County, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Conservation's Maine Forest Service.

According to the release, Worcester Holdings failed to complete a land use change within two years of clearing its land for use as a wreath brush operation. The land was instead clearcut without oversight by a licensed forester. The consent order also resolved DEP citations regarding area water pollution and air emissions.
