Down East hospital closer to independence

Down East Community Hospital took another step toward ending its receivership status by appointing a new board of trustees.

The move is one of the last steps needed before the Machias hospital can emerge from receivership under Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, which was appointed in 2009 to manage the hospital following complaints over governance and quality of care, as well as the high-profile death of a patient in 2008. The hospital's corporators unanimously approved the board of health care professionals and business people from the Machias area, according to the Bangor Daily News. Members include Cynthia Huggins, president of the University of Maine at Machias, Debra Getchell, chief financial officer of Machias Savings Bank, and David Whitney, owner of Whitney Originals in Machias.

In March, DEHC received a full license from the state after operating under a conditional license since 2008. Interim CEO Doug Jones expects receivership under EMHS will last at least through the summer.
