Unemployment rate steady at 8.1%

Maine's unemployment rate is holding fairly steady with 8.1% in the month of April.

April's unemployment rate is not much different from a revised rate of 8.2% in March and is unchanged from last April's rate, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Labor. The number of unemployed people was 57,200, down 100 from one year ago, the first decrease since late 2007. However, there were 6,500 fewer wage and salary jobs in April than in March, after three consecutive months of job gains, a fluctuation Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman said was not unusual during periods of economic recovery, according to the release.

The national unemployment rate for April was 9.9%, up from 9.7% from the month before and 8.9% one year ago.
