The operator of the Amtrak Downeaster has chosen a site in Brunswick to build a $4 million train layover facility, but some residents aren't happy with the choice.
The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority board on Monday voted to build the facility on an 8-acre parcel near Bouchard Drive, selecting the location out of three options, according to The Forecaster. A consulting group hired by NNEPRA recommended the Bouchard Drive site because of its previous use as a railroad property, its proximity to Maine Street Station and cost effectiveness. But nearby residents oppose the location, concerned about potential noise and pollution.
Patricia Quinn, head of NNEPRA, told the paper she plans to create an advisory group to guide the design of the facility that could include NNEPRA staff, consultants, Brunswick municipal staff and members of the community. The 60,000-square-foot facility will allow NNEPRA to perform maintenance and refueling work on passenger trains, which are expected to begin servicing Brunswick next year.
