Eastern Maine Med to cut 100

Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor will over the next few weeks eliminate 100 full-time positions following a recent cut of $4.6 million in revenues from Maine's Medicare program, MaineCare.

Hospital administrators are cutting 3% of its staff and planning to make most of the cuts by offering 109 eligible employees early retirement incentives, hospital spokeswoman Jill McDonald told the Bangor Daily News. Those eligible must be near retirement age and hold positions that can remain unfilled or be covered internally over the next few weeks. If enough employees don't take the retirement packages, the hospital may also consider making layoffs. The hospital attributed the reduction in staff to the economy's impact on the state's MaineCare revenues and to improved outpatient services, which have halted high demands for inpatient care.

In September, the hospital cut 15 positions.
