Eastport conveyor system trial could lead to export deal

The first use of the Port of Eastport’s bulk conveyor system is expected this spring.

Quoddy Tides reported a trial shipment of wood chips to Europe, expected this spring, could lead to an export deal.

The automated conveying system, at Estes Head Terminal, runs direct from storage to ship loading and is capable of 1,000 tons per hour loading rate, dependent on density, according to information on the Eastport Port Authority website. Its installation was part of $10 million port expansion completed in 2013.

The system is anchored by a 7-acre open storage pad with additional acreage available for future expansion. Accompanying the system is 133,000 square feet of dry warehouse storage. Built in 1998 with a naturally occurring mean low water draft of 65 feet, Estes Head is the deepest natural seaport in the continental United States, and has been one of the fastest-growing ports on the East Coast.

Adjacent to the Estes Head Terminal is the Breakwater Terminal, first built in 1962, the rebuilt and expanded in 2017. The City of Eastport's $15 million rebuild replaced the original breakwater, which collapsed Dec. 4, 2014.
