Enrollment up at UMaine, Husson

An influx of out-of-state students bumped up enrollment in the University of Maine's freshman class by 2%, while enrollment also increased at Husson University.

Classes at UMaine Orono begin today for the class of 2014, which totals 1,837 students -- 1,454 from Maine and 383 from out of state, according to The Associated Press. Out-of-state enrollment increased 7% over last year, when the class size was 1,803. Enrollment is still down from the 2,094 students who began attending UMaine in 2008.

Meanwhile, enrollment at Husson University increased by 300 this fall, according to the Bangor Daily News. A total of 3,559 students will attend the Bangor school this fall, including 2,988 at Husson at 571 at the New England School of Communications. A Husson spokeswoman attributed the growth in undergraduate enrollment to a new doctor of pharmacy degree.
