FAA mandates owners register drones by early next year

Federal regulators passed a rule Monday requiring all owners of drones to register with the Federal Aviation Administration by Feb. 19, 2016.

The registration for small, unmanned aircraft is part of recommendations a FAA task force presented in November. The rule applies to owners of unmanned aircraft weighing more than 0.55 pounds and less than 55 pounds, according to a press release from the FAA.

“Make no mistake: unmanned aircraft enthusiast(s) are aviators, and with that title comes a great deal of responsibility,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in the release. “Registration gives us an opportunity to work with these users to operate their unmanned aircraft safely.”

Owners can register online.

Earlier this year, Portland law firm Bernstein Shur formed a drone legal team to address emerging legal challenges from an increase in drone use by businesses, particularly among architects, engineers and construction firms.

"The need has arrived at our doorstep because the technology of drones is progressing at an unbelievably rapid pace,” Michael Bosse, part of Bernstein Shur's drone team and the leader of the law firm’s construction practice group, told Mainebiz this fall.
