FairPoint sees modest customer drop

FairPoint Communications lost only 1.8% of its phone access lines in northern New England during the first three months of the year, despite persistent customer service, billing and email complaints.

That's an improvement from the 2.7% decline in the fourth quarter of 2008 in the number of residential and business access lines in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, according to the company's quarterly earnings report released Tuesday. The number of high-speed data subscribers rose by 1.3% in the first quarter. Revenue fell 2.4% to $311.6 million.

Thousands of customers have reported problems since FairPoint switched to its own computer systems in February, following last year's $2.3 billion takeover of Verizon Communications' landline telephone and Internet network in the three states.
