FairPoint to ask Vt. to reconsider rejection

FairPoint Communications officials say they will work with Vermont regulators first to try and convince them to approve the telecommunications firm's plan to emerge from bankruptcy before turning to a federal bankruptcy court to overturn their rejection of the plan.

Michael Smith, president of FairPoint's Vermont operations, told the Associated Press the company would prefer to work with the Vermont Public Service Board after the board in June rejected FairPoint's reorganization plan. Vermont regulators refused to extend FairPoint's deadline to expand broadband service in that state and also rejected the company's request to not collect penalty fees for service problems.

Both the Maine and New Hampshire public utilities commissions have approved FairPoint's reorganization plan.
